Newborn essentials checklist — what you actually need (and what you don't)
A practical newborn essentials list from real parents — what to buy, what to borrow, what to skip — plus a hospital bag mini-list.

Baby retail is designed to make you panic-buy. The truth is, newborns need very little in the first few weeks. Here's the no-fluff list of what you'll actually use, organized by category. Anything not on this list is optional or can wait.
Sleep
- Bassinet, crib, or co-sleeper with a firm flat mattress (one, not all three).
- 4–6 fitted sheets in the right size.
- 4–6 swaddles (muslin) — used as blankets, burp cloths, sun shades.
- Sleep sacks once they outgrow swaddles (~2–3 months).
Feeding
- If breastfeeding: 2 nursing bras, lanolin or coconut oil, a couple of soft tops.
- If formula or pumping: 4–6 bottles + a way to clean them; one box of formula to start.
- Breast pump (insurance often covers one — check before you buy).
- Burp cloths — 8–10 minimum.
Diapering
- 1 small pack of newborn diapers and 1 of size 1 (don't stockpile newborn — they grow fast).
- Sensitive baby wipes (unscented).
- Diaper cream.
- A small changing pad you can move around the house.
Clothing (less than you think)
- 6–8 onesies in newborn and 0–3 month sizes.
- 4–6 footed sleepers — these are the workhorse.
- 2–3 zip-up swaddle suits for night.
- Mittens, a couple of soft hats, and socks.
Out and about
- An infant car seat that fits your car (install + check it before the due date).
- A stroller or stroller/car-seat combo.
- A baby carrier — a soft wrap or structured carrier you can put on solo.
- A diaper bag (a regular backpack works fine).
Health + safety
- Digital thermometer.
- Nail file (clippers are scary in week 1).
- Nasal aspirator.
- Infant gas drops + a backup pacifier.
Hospital bag mini-list
- Going-home outfit for baby (with a hat).
- Soft loose clothing for you + a robe.
- Phone charger + a long cable.
- Snacks, lip balm, hair ties.
- Photo ID and insurance card.
- Installed infant car seat in the car.
What you don't need to buy now
Skip the wipe warmer, the baby shoes, the giant stuffed animals, the special bath thermometer, the bottle sterilizer (a saucepan works), and most fancy gadgets. Wait until baby's home for a few weeks — you'll know exactly what's missing.
Make your registry painless
MyBabyBase's smart registry pulls in product titles, prices, and photos from any link — and lets friends contribute to a cash fund for diapers, daycare, or college if they'd rather give money than guess.
